Almost all maintenance, reliability or asset management professionals have heard of reliability engineering. But what is reliability engineering? A quick google search will return the following definition “Reliability Engineering is engineering that emphasizes dependability in the lifecycle management of a product. Dependability, or reliability, describes the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period of time.”
Think about your maintenance program. How often are your PMs scheduled? How were those frequencies established? If you are in the majority, the chances are that the frequencies were either established from the OEM manual, or by someone in the department without data.
As the new year has arrived, many of the professionals in maintenance & reliability are finishing up shutdowns. Shutdown planning and execution is a rigorous endeavor but is necessary to ensure the assets continue to deliver value. The same goes in preparing for a new year.
