Cyber Security with Howard Penrose

Cyber security can be a significant issue why your assets are not working as they are supposed to and you face more downtime than expected. When you use network enabled systems, there are a lot of things on the internet that can cause damage to your system. Viruses such as malwares, ad-wares, and other harmful software leave your asset vulnerable to all sorts of attacks. If you are a leading organization in the industry, your systems can be exposed to hackers as well. So, there are a lot of aspects that an organization needs to look at when installing an industrial system in the facility.

In this episode, we covered:

  • Why is cyber security a significant issue?
  • What are some security risks that organizations must look out for?
  • Why does an organization need to understand the risks involved when installing a new system or remote device?
  • And much more!

There are a lot of incidents in the history of internet where systems were hacked and in some of those cases, the damage was so severe that whole companies had to be shut down to mitigate the damage that hackers had done. That s why there s a serious need for cyber security to be taken seriously within the industry. The organizations should not only be ready for any sort of security risk but they should also plan ahead and prepare for such cases where data loss or a breach can cause damage at a large scale.

There are different type of cyber criminals and hacking communities that have made it a business to blackmail organizations for money and in most of the cases, they destroy your systems even if you have met their demands. The use of different brute force attacks and advanced systems that can penetrate your firewalls and hack into your systems in a matter of moments has left everyone stunned in some of the historic hacks. The leading industries of the world have come a long way learning from such incidents and security measures are also part of the systems these days.

There are various secret code enabled systems that go into hibernation or complete shut down when such an attack is imminent but there s still a long way ahead in this journey towards safety of data and systems. The organizations need to understand the risks involved whenever they install a new system or any remote device. Cyber safety is not just for IT professionals, it s for everyone working in that organization where they interact with internet enabled devices. The organizations should be aware of any type of device they have installed in their system and should only do so if they seriously need that device.

Awareness of potential risks and delivering the right information about cyber security is very important in the organizations. There should be clear strategies in place for system usage and cyber security related risk management that goes with it. Then, proper management of logins and passwords goes a long way in network security. Organizations should make sure that their employees understand the ways a virus can be introduced into their systems. The most frequent way is via email, so suspicious emails should be managed the right way. These simple steps and communicating with IT department on network awareness can make a huge difference.
