This episode focuses on the change management aIsenhour Shon 5x7 1622nd the impact that it can have on your maintenance program. So, what is change management? It occurs at different levels in the organizations but the most basic level the people level that makes the organizational culture needs to be tended first. It happens a lot that after the successful planning and scheduling, work execution seems to be fine in the short term but fails horribly in the long term because the change process was not addressed and handled properly at all the critical levels in the organizational framework. So, what things need to be addressed first?

Creating the awareness among the staff is the start to the long road of change management. Then you need to keep repeating those awareness details and let every individual know and understand what s in it for them. You need to start from the people who will truly follow you to begin this process of change and then go along a smooth path following a model perhaps for a sustainable change in a step by step manner. A leader alone is not enough to successfully address the change at every level so he needs to work on identifying the different leaders who will stand with him through this whole process.

There are a number of change management models but ADKAR model is really simple and effective. This model consists of five steps.

  • Awareness is the first step that means, you have to make the people understand why they need this change that is happening.
  • Then you need to create the desire in them to support this newly implemented change and participate in the process in every way they can.
  • You will also need to impart all the necessary knowledge on how to make the change happen.
  • After that, implementing that change in the right way by using the provided knowledge is a critical step because of the sensitive nature of change management.
  • Once the implementation is complete, Reinforcement is needed to make the change last long and have a sustainable program that will benefit the whole organization.

The other model is Kotter s 8-step model that includes:

  • Establishing a sense of urgency by letting people know the crisis organization faces and the opportunities that the change will create.
  • Creating the guiding coalition to make teams and leading them together to make efforts for change.
  • Developing a vision and strategy to direct change and make sure to achieve it.
  • Communicating the change vision in every way possible.
  • Empowering broad-based action to remove obstacles and encouraging to take action.
  • Generating short-term wins to make the performance visible.
  • Consolidating gains and producing more change by transformations like new projects and hiring new people.
  • Anchoring new approaches in the culture to ensure sustainable succession and development.

Leadership needs to be very capable of handling a situational crisis that keeps blocking the change. There will always be people opposing the change but if you be patient and just put a little bit effort, it will incredibly increase the chances of success.
