How to Start a Vibe Program with Jesus Sefonte

Even though the vibration analysis has been around for a long time, there are very few organizations that use it. Machinery vibration is the study of the behavior of rotating machinery for detecting faults based on the monitoring of different machinery components using vibration signals. All the rotating machines vibrate either in a good or bad way and vibration analysis is the best way to predict machinery behavior by making it part of your predictive maintenance program. It helps you access machinery health, predict failures, and do corrective actions when needed. So, if you have critical rotating machinery in your facility, vibration analysis is a must.

The episode highlights are:

  • What are the fundamentals of Vibration Analysis
  • What is an Asset Criticality Analysis
  • Why is a plan required to successfully implement vibration analysis

An asset criticality analysis can help you identify your critical assets and by performing vibration analysis, you can achieve your economic and performance goals by preventing failures in those assets. These are the things you should do before you even get started with vibration technology. RCM analysis or FMEA can also help you determine asset criticality and it provides the basis for going into a vibration analysis program that can save your money and time. To do all this, you need to have trained people who would know what they are doing.

The experts you have on the program should have certain competence level and they should have experienced and certifications if they are going to be able to configure and operate the vibration equipment the right way. Having the right skill set and being able to collect useful data to make right decisions goes a long way in vibration analysis. As data collection is the first step in this process, you have to make you have got the right analyzer to do the job. The selection of the tools will depend on the type of equipment you have in the facility and the budget you have for this.

You can always outsource if you don t have the right personnel and experience pool for vibration analysis but if you can train your people to get started with it, it will help you in the long term. It can take time and you can always bring in the outside help to consult on certain things but it all starts with the data. You should at least be a good data collecting organization to be able to make a smart decision on how to get started with this. You can only be successful if you have certain practices such as predictive maintenance and good lubrication program in place.

There must be a plan to work with in order to successfully implement vibration analysis. In the beginning, you can identify your critical assets, assess training level of your personnel, and then the selection of vibration equipment by collecting machine data and understanding it well. This kind of information is vital before setting test conditions and carrying out actual calculations for analysis.  Vibration analysis requires both strategic and operational excellence for successful implementation but having dedicated teams with right skills set can make it very easy to reap the rewards that it has to offer.
